JTC CleanTech 3: Expanded Metal, Perforated Metal and Solid Stainless Steel Sheets

JTC CleanTech 3: BCA Green Mark Platinum Award

JTC CleanTech 3 is a multi-block research and industrial development in the Jurong Innovation District, designed by Architects 61 and certified BCA Green Mark Platinum. Supply Bay supplied three metal products across the project: fine expanded mesh (Medium Mesh M12-30) for stair railing infill panels, perforated metal sheet for functional screening, and solid stainless steel sheets. Our products were selected for their superior environmental performance and modern aesthetic, promoting natural ventilation, reduce solar heat gain, and energy efficiency - all key principles in sustainable building design.

About JTC CleanTech Three

JTC CleanTech Three comprises eight business park laboratory blocks and one office block in Singapore's Jurong Innovation District, serving as the gateway development for CleanTech Park — Singapore's first eco-business park masterplan. (Source: Architizer). The development was designed as a global test bed for clean technology products and solutions, with a focus on creating an integrated work-and-research environment connected to its natural surroundings. The existing wildlife corridor was preserved, and the main corridor loop at lab level links all blocks and overlooks a central atrium.

The design by Architects 61 draws on the site's proximity to Singapore's last remaining dragon kiln. The facade employs three GFRC textures — stone, terracotta, and brick — referencing Jurong's brick-making history and the kiln context.

JTC CleanTech 3 received the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award. It also received the SIA Architectural Design Awards 2023 Merit Award for Industrial and Utility Buildings, the Architizer A+Awards 2023 for Sustainable Commercial Building, and the FIABCI Singapore Property Awards 2023 for Sustainable Development and Industrial Manufacturing.

Fine Expanded Mesh (12-30) — Stair Railing Infill Panels

M12-30 Expanded Mesh Railings

For the stair railing infill panels, the specification called for Supply Bay's 12-30 fine expanded mesh.

Product specifications:

  • Mesh opening: 9mm × 29mm (SWM × LWM)

  • Base thickness: 3mm

  • Material: Steel

Medium Mesh 12-30 is not a commonly stocked product in Singapore. Its small 9mm short-way opening combined with a 3mm base thickness is a specification that most standard suppliers do not carry — the small hole opening and high thickness places it outside the range of typical catalogue stock. Contractors and QS teams specifying this grade should confirm availability before nominating it, or engage Supply Bay directly as the supply source. Supply Bay holds stock of the M12-30 specification for the Singapore market.

The small aperture was appropriate for this railing infill application for two reasons.

  • First, it meets the infill panel requirements for stair and railing applications where gap size between balustrade elements is governed by safety standards — the 9mm opening is well within the typical maximum gap requirements for occupied building railings.

  • Second, the fine diamond pattern reads as a refined surface at close range, consistent with the quality of finish expected in a professionally managed institutional and research environment.

At 3mm base thickness, the panel has the structural rigidity to span between railing posts without excessive deflection under lateral load — a practical requirement for any railing infill panel that will be subject to incidental contact and physical use over the building's service life.

Perforated Metal — Screening Panels

Staggered slotted perforated metal (unique)

Supply Bay supplied perforated metal sheet in a horizontal staggered slotted pattern for green wall support structures and functional screening panels across the development.

The horizontal staggered slotted pattern is a non-standard perforation geometry. Unlike conventional round or square hole patterns — which are symmetric and available as standard stock — the slotted pattern uses elongated rectangular apertures arranged in horizontal rows, with each row staggered relative to the row above and below. This produces a directional, horizontally oriented open area across the panel surface.

For QS and contractor teams, the key specification parameters for this pattern are:

  • Slot orientation: horizontal

  • Arrangement: staggered rows (each row offset from adjacent rows)

  • Open area: calibrated to ventilation and drainage requirements of the specific application zone

  • Material: Aluminium

For green wall substrate applications, the slot geometry provides natural horizontal drainage channels across the panel face, allowing water to move across the substrate surface and drain out at the base. This is a functional advantage over round hole perforation for applications where consistent moisture drainage is a performance requirement behind a planted wall system.

The horizontal staggered slotted pattern is not a standard catalogue item at most Singapore perforated metal suppliers. It requires tooling and setup for the specific slot geometry.

Solid Stainless Steel Sheets

In addition to the mesh and perforated metal products, Supply Bay supplied solid stainless steel sheet for feature surfaces and architectural detailing within the development. Solid stainless steel sheet is specified where a continuous, non-perforated metal surface is required, typically for cladding panels, column wraps, feature wall linings, and joinery elements where the material is exposed at close range and surface finish quality is the primary specification driver.

For JTC CleanTech 3, the stainless steel sheet specification was consistent with the project's overall material standard: a hard-wearing, corrosion-resistant surface suited to an occupied institutional environment with high daily footfall and long maintenance intervals. Stainless steel solid sheet is available from Supply Bay in SS304 and SS316 grades, in 2B mill finish, No. 4 brushed, and mirror finish, in standard sheet sizes and custom-cut dimensions.

Sustainability Notes for Green Mark Submissions

For project teams working on BCA Green Mark submissions, the relevant sustainability attributes of these materials are:

  • ETTV contribution. Facade mesh used as an external shading layer reduces the solar heat gain component of the ETTV calculation. Material data including open area percentage and shading coefficient can be provided by Supply Bay for inclusion in facade performance documentation.

  • Maintainability. Correctly specified and finished expanded metal and perforated metal in Singapore's tropical climate have service lives measured in decades.

Local Supplier of Expanded Metal and Perforated Metal

Supply Bay is a trusted metal supplier of all types of expanded metals, perforated metal sheets, and laser-cut panels to contractors, QS firms, and developers across Singapore and the Asia Pacific region. We can provide full material documentation to support project submittals.
