What are perforated metals?

Perforated Metals

Perforated metal has a long history in industrial use. For many years, perforated metal was a purely functional product used in industrial applications such as filtration and grating systems. Recently, perforated metals have emerged at the forefront of design, becoming a popular material of choice for architects and designers. Read on to learn more about perforated metals and how you can incorporate them into your designs.

How are perforated metals made?

Perforated metals are produced using a punch press machine, which features sharp perforation tools that can be customised to desired hole size and shape. As the solid metal sheet is run across the perforation roller, the punch press rotates, continuously punching holes in the passing sheet.

Applications

What can perforated metals be used for?

Perforated metal panels and sheets are extremely versatile and can be used both outdoors and indoors. They can be used to cover anything from wall facades and ceilings, to partitions or even stair railings and shelving. Due to their durability, easy installation and low cost, perforated metals such as perforated metal mesh and perforated aluminium are often the first choice among contractors and even homeowners for small to medium sized projects.

The best thing is that perforated metal panels can give the illusion of a bigger space. This is an important concern for space-constrained urban living. The holes in perforated metal create an open and airy feel, allowing sunlight and wind to enter to create a well-ventilated interior.

To combat the lack of daylight in a terrace, a perforated facade was used as a perfect complement to a lightwell, creating a brighter, breezier interior. Since a significant portion of space had to be allocated to the staircase, perforated metal sheets were chosen, allowing light to flood the depth of the building without reducing valuable floor space. A light material palette of cool grey and white perforated metals were also selected to create a visual element of a larger space.

Black perforated metal sheets are a popular choice for industrial spaces. Perforated sheets can be used to conceal unsightly pipes, wires or machines - in this case, they conceal messy computer wires, creating a sleek and tidy aesthetic.

Spaces can be basic, but they don’t have to be boring. Perforated metal sheets are perfect for elevating minimalist spaces with an interesting textural element. Pair with spotlights to create an interesting interplay of light and shadows to design a truly unique walk-in wardrobe.
